This was the first one I read and my initial thought was that picture books were never this gorgeous when I was a kid. There are several David Wiesner books on my ‘must review’ list. The plot in a nutshell: Two lizard friends share an artistic afternoon in the desert As you can see in the link, the setting of the show was in a desert and they used things that would not normally be in the desert.Written and Illustrated by David Wiesner Clarion Books, 2010 David Wiesner incorporates a lot of ACME products within his books, which represent the show Wile E. We also see an ACME record player in the background a motif that runs through the story and all of David Wiesner’s books. Throughout the story they pink lizard was kind of the leader of the pink orange and yellow lizards. The pink lizard is not facing right, the yellow and orange lizards’ feet are pointing to the left but their heads are facing right signifying they want to be on board with the new way of painting but they are afraid of what the pink lizard would say. The orange and yellow lizards heads’ are pointing up and to the right so the painting points us to the lizards and the lizards heads are pointed to the cactus leading the picture and the whole story to the moral of Pollock Jackson’s story having an open mind can lead to success.Įveryone is facing towards the right of the page, which means that they are all going to or accepting of the different process of art that was presented by Max. Max is in an identical stance to Art’s and his arm is pointing to the painting on the orange and yellow lizards. Signifying that both ways of art are acceptable now. Art and max seem to have switched places. In the background we see Max Painting a picture of the yellow and orange lizards on a canvas. This is a hidden story that parallels with David Wiesner’s story of Art and Max. Pollock Jackson created this masterpiece in 1949 and he too was frowned upon at first for this type of art because it was so different from anything else. The painting on the cactus and on the cover is a representation of a famous painting by Pollock Jackson called Number 8. His body stance points the readers eyes to the cactus which is painted the same way as the hard cover. Art is in a stance with his knees bent and arm stretched out splattering paint onto a cactus. Now it is the pink lizards turn to get turned into “Art” so he too can open up his mind and be inspired.Īrt is standing right behind the pink lizard. The Pink lizard has the same attitude towards Art’s art as the attitude that Art had towards Max’s art at the beginning of the story. The wide eyes and stretched out fingers leads the readers to believe that he is annoyed and frustrated.

He is looking right at us, which creates demand and pulls the reader right to his character. The first thing that our eyes go to on the page is the pink lizard with very wide eyes and paint dripping from his head to toes.
